Mathematics Goes to the Movies

by Burkard Polster and Marty Ross

Bedazzled (2000)

Elizabeth Hurley plays the Devil. In this scene she is a schoolteacher.
DEVIL: O.K. boys. Tonight’s homework.
(She walks to the blackboard, on which is written the equation “x^n+y^n+z^n ”, followed by “Solve for n>2. SHOW YOUR WORK”:) Algebra. X to the n’th plus Y to the n’th equals Z to the n’th. Well, you’re never going to use that, are you?
Laughter from the class.
